Making an Appointment

If you need to see a doctor on the same day, please try to telephone before 10.00am.

If you need to see a doctor urgently, the emergency doctor may telephone you to ask you more about your condition; you may have to wait until the end of surgery to be seen or you may be asked to come in and see the Emergency Doctor. It helps the Emergency doctor if you are able to give the receptionist an idea of what the problem is.

You should normally be seen within half-an-hour of your appointment time. Occasionally a doctor is called away on an emergency. If this happens, you will be offered the choice of either waiting, or making another appointment or see another doctor. Please remember delays can occur if a patient requires an exceptionally long consultation. Please ask at reception if you have any concerns while you are waiting

If you need to see a nurse or health care assistant please tell the receptionist what the appointment is for so that enough time is allowed, and the appointment is booked with the right person

If you are unable to keep an appointment, please telephone the practice as soon as possible so that someone else may be seen.

Please note that although the doctors work at the times shown, they may not always be available for surgeries. All the GPs share in the emergency doctor workload, and supervision of trainees.

Home Visits

home_visit Home visits are for the housebound and seriously ill. Otherwise, we expect you to come to the surgery to be seen as we have your medical records here and all our medical equipment and facilities available for your examination and treatment. The doctor can see many more patients in the surgery.

If you are too ill to come to the surgery and need a home visit, please try to telephone the health centre before 10.00 am. You will be asked to speak to a doctor.

Telephone Advice

telephone_brown If you feel that you may not need an appointment, but want some advice from your doctor, you can telephone and leave a message. If you phone after 3 pm your call may be left until the next day. Urgent telephone enquiries are dealt with as soon as possible by the emergency doctor. Other telephone enquiries are dealt with by your doctor at the end of his/her surgery, although if you call when your doctor is away, your message will be dealt with on his/her return, unless you tell the receptionist that you feel your concern is more urgent.

Please make sure that you are available to take a telephone call from the doctor if you ask for one. If you do not answer it may be assumed that you no longer want the advice requested.

It is very difficult for us to predict the time that the doctor will call as he/she is constantly assessing priorities. While we try to help, asking for a doctor to ring between specific times may not be possible as each doctor has the needs of all his/her patients to accommodate.

Ambulance Service

If you have a serious and life-threatening medical emergency then ring 999 and ask for an ambulance. Often events do not happen quite so clearly, and you may need a doctor urgently.

When the Health Centre is open

Telephone the main surgery number 01993 703641, press 1 for an emergency. The receptionist will ask you for some important information, particularly your name and where you are. Please help with as much information as you can about your condition so that the doctor can assess the urgency of your situation.

When the Health Centre is closed

If you have a medical emergency when the practice is closed, please phone the Out of Hours service on 0845 3458995.

Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, Jubilee House, 5510 John Smith Drive, Oxford Business Park South, Cowley, Oxford OX4 2LH, is responsible for the Out of Hours Service between the hours of 6.30pm and 8.00am Monday to Friday, bank holidays and all weekend, i.e. Friday 6.30pm to Monday 8.00am.
